Why Are Pests a Problem in the Kitchen

Kitchens can be hub for pest problems. Crumbs, spilled food, and trash attract pests like cockroaches and ants. Food debris will also attract rats and mice. If you have a rodent problem, snakes could be next. Snakes enter homes for two reasons – shelter from the elements and hunting food. So, as temperatures rise, snakes could enter your home. If you have rodents, it makes your kitchen more attractive.

How to Stop Pest Problems in the Kitchen

Eliminating their food source is the best way to prevent pests. Typical kitchen cleanliness will go a long way. Proper storage of food, cleaning after meals, regularly taking out the trash to a secured garbage. Rats, mice, and snakes can squeeze through tiny holes. Identifying potential entry points and sealing them appropriately is the most effective (and chemical-free) method to keep your house rodent- and snake-free.

Rats and mice will avoid people. You probably won’t see these rodents, but they will leave evidence behind. Rodent droppings along the baseboard or inside your pantry are common signs. Mice leave a musky odor where they are active.

The good news about snakes is they won’t eat your food. Rodents will though. These rodents spread diseases by contaminating stores of food. Rodents can gnaw through virtually any material you store food in. Anything food storage that has gnaw marks on it, throw it away. You will also need to decontaminate any areas that have rodent droppings on it.
